Ladera resort, St. Lucia

Ladera resort, St. Lucia
The Bottom Line
A small, intimate resort for lovers, Ladera is comprised of just 25 suites and villas. The lodge-like buildings are constructed of Caribbean timbers, and the guestrooms are built to resemble luxury treehouses. The surprise is that unlike conventional hotel rooms they are missing the fourth wall – all the better for making the breathtaking scenery an integral part of the décor. Telescopes in each room help guests search the velvety, star-strewn skies at night.

Guide Review - Ladera St. Lucia
Robert Stewart, the charming general manager of Ladera, tells guests that the Pitons have been included in Oprah’s list of “five places to see in your lifetime.” Ladera, perched on a ridge 1,100 feet above sea level, is the place to go for Piton panoramas, especially at sundown.

Each open-air suite has its own private pool, set so that it is sheltered from prying eyes as well as tropical rainsqualls. Since Ladera is an adult-only resort (children over 15 are allowed; 7-14 year-olds during Christmas holidays only), there's no need to worry about safety gates.

Guests who wish to head for the shore can arrange for a complimentary 15-20 minute shuttle to Eden Bay to access the beach at Jalousie Plantation or Anse Chastanet beach; the common pool at Ladera is beautifully landscaped with flowering shrubs, and cocktail and snack service is available.

Dasheene, the resort’s award-winning terrace restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves nouvelle Caribbean cuisine. Executive chef Orlando Satchell has spearheaded a movement to bring organic farming to St. Lucia. Entrees include Island Mahi-Mahi with plantain crust and lime salsa or Sugar Cane Steak served atop root-vegetable fries. Daytime dining is casual, while dinner dress is casual chic: slacks and collared shirts for men.

Tcholit cocktail lounge features tropical drinks, appetizers, live music and glorious views. The recently opened Ti Kai Pose on-site spa offers a full slate of services.
