From a "drive-through" volcano to an array of watersports, check out this list of 'can't-miss' attractions, activities, and tours on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
1. Drive-through Volcano
It’s been 400,000 years since volcanic activity occurred here, but the pit that resulted from a collapsed dome of molten lava at the La Soufriere volcano presents a fascinating picture of what the earth must have looked like back then. As you approach the side of the crater, the sulphuris smell of rotten eggs rises up. The red, blue and green tinged landscape, including 24 steaming vents, hints at deposits of iron, copper oxide, magnesium and others minerals bubbling to the surface.
2. Climb Gros Piton
Climbing the 2,619-foot Gros Piton is for the hale and hardy, but the breathtaking views, scenery and feeling of accomplishment are worth it. A fee of $25 per person pays for a well-trained guide for the 4-mile round-trip route. Hikers typically start out in the early cool hours of the day to complete the round trip, which may take from 2-6 hours one way. 19,000 acres of rainforest makes up the lush interior of St. Lucia, providing many opportunities to view exotic plants, flowers and birds, including the rare Jacquot parrot. A naturalist or forest officer is required to serve as a guide to hikers making their way past giant ferns and orchids to stunning waterfalls.
Rain Forest Sky Rides provides a unique way to view the natural resource from 90 feet above the ground on a 75-minute ride in an open-sided aerial tram.
Both first-time riders and experienced bikers can enjoy the paths cut into the plantation forests that are part of Anse Chastenet. Multi-level courses accommodate beginners who need to brush up their skills, as well as advanced adventure bikers looking for the adrenalin thrills of steep uphills and tight switchbacks.
5. Watersports
Diving, snorkeling and windsurfing are some of the best ways to enjoy the sparkling clear turquoise waters that gently wash the shores of the anses, or bays, of St. Lucia. Steep dropoffs and nearby reefs make it possible to see the underwater world without having to boat out to deeper waters. Beginner windsurfers stick to the calm waters on the west side of the island, while those with more experience catch the best rides at Cas en Bas and Vieux Fort on the east side.
