One of Nevis's great strengths is its authentic, uncommercialized feel. Sure, like many Caribbean islands you can go windsurfing, scuba diving, and golfing, but it's when you get away from the resorts that the island really shines.
Climbing Mt. Nevis and Other Hikes
Sunrise Tours offers excellent hikes of Nevis, ranging from a gentle walk through the Valley and old Amerindian settlements to a full, grueling four-hour journey to the top of Mt. Nevis itself. Explore waterfalls, ravines, and scenic overlooks and learn about local history, flora, and fauna courtesy of Sunrise's owner (and tour operator) Lynell E. Liburd or any of his excellent guides. Anyone can lie around on a beach. On Nevis, you're well rewarded for getting on your feet.
The Nevis Botanical Garden
Probably Nevis' most well-known tourist attraction, and a beacon for day-trippers from St. Kitts, the Nevis Botanical Garden features hundreds of exotic tropical plants from the Caribbean and beyond, notably palms and orchids. The Rainforest Conservancy is themed like a pre-Colombian ruin, with waterfalls and lush foliage. Located at Montpelier Plantation. Open Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is US$10 adults, US$7 children ages 6-12, under 6 is free.Catamaran Sail and Snorkeling
Unlike some of the longer catamaran excursions, which take all day and visit several islands, Lennox Wallace captains the Caona on a short 2-1/2-hour sail and snorkel trip out of Pinney's Beach. Relax on the wide netting of the catamaran as you round the island of Nevis and approach the sleepy, mountainous reef-end of St. Kitts (ideal for seeing varied tropical sea life). Swim, soak up the sun, or take pictures while the staff serves you complimentary rum punch on the wonderful lazy-day excursion. Trip costs approximately US$74 per person (gratuity not included). Call (869) 469-8494 for more info.Horseback Riding
As a mountain island, Nevis's terrain is as varied as its wildlife. And it's only 36-square miles, so why not explore it on horseback? Ride into the hills or across sandy beaches on outings arranged through the Nevis Equestrian Centre. Group and private lessons are available for the uninitiated (US$30 and $50 respectively), as are a variety of trail-rides, from a short 90-minute tour to a five-hour cross-island trek.Carriage Rides
For those who don't desire the rigors (or sore bottoms) of going horseback, there's always the option of a relaxed Horse-and-buggy ride across the island. Perfect for families as well as couples, rides are US$85.00 for up to three adults, or two adults and two children. Bookings can be made through the Hermitage Plantation Inn, located in the Gingerland district. Contact the hotel at 1-800-682-4025.Walking Tour of Charlestown and the Alexander Hamilton Birthplace
The casual sightseer should notice something different about Charlestown, Nevis's central (and lone) city: no McDonalds, no Pizza Hut, and no Burger King. And precious few tourist shops selling the same five t-shirts and custom key-rings that tend to pop up on many other major Caribbean islands. Charlestown remains historic and local. The Nevis Tourism Authority office, located close to the ferry dock, is a good place to start. There's also a fresh food market, several restaurants and cafes, and the birthplace of U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton. The Hamilton house doubles as the Museum of Nevis History, which is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 12 noon (admission is US$5.00 for adults, US$2.00 for kids).
Daytrips to St. Kitts
Nevis' sister island of St. Kitts is larger and more developed, but still a pretty laid-back and peaceful place. History buffs will love the imposing Brimstone Hill fortress and the historic buildings and town square in Basseterre, and Frigate Bay is the best place to go on either island for true Caribbean nightlife.
