Where to Stay in Montserrat
Montserrat's Best Hotels, Villas, Guests Houses and Lodging

By Robert Curley, About.com

If you're looking for a full-service hotel in Montserrat, your choice is easy: there's only one currently open. However, the island has plenty of other kinds of lodging, including some great villas for rent at reasonable prices and the historic island home of former Beatles producer George Martin.

Montserrat's only full-service hotel has a pretty perch overlooking Little Bay -- destined to become the island's new capital -- and a fine array of amenities, including free, in-room Internet access, a small but lovely pool, 18 clean and spacious rooms with both interior and exterior balconies, and a very good restaurant, Tina's. It's not the most romantic spot on the island, and you'll need a car or cab to get anywhere (the hotel is along a steep, winding road), but it's perfect for business travelers or anyone who wants the feel and familiarity of a 'real' hotel.

The Montserrat home of Sir George Martin -- the music legend still owns it -- recently opened to the public as a guesthouse and restaurant and promises to quickly become one of Montserrat's most popular visitor destinations. The breezy home has a lovely, wide verandah for al fresco dining, a bright, open common area, and six guest rooms where musicians once stayed while recording at Martin's nearby Air Studios. The estate has a swimming pool and tennis courts. The restaurant features traditonal English cuisine and a weekly barbecue. For more information, call 011-664-491-5210, or email mwilson@candw.ms

Camelot by the Sea

Acclaimed as Montserrat's most lovely and lavish villa, Camelot by the Sea perches on a high cliff on the island's south shore, its bright yellow turret a landmark for local sailors. The driveway is lined with towering Royal Palms, and the home includes four bedrooms, four baths, and a cinema room -- and that's just inside. The ample balconies and patios on the sea-facing side of the home surround a freeform pool crossed by a whimsical arched bridge, a hot tub, and a full-featured outdoor bar.

Cythera

Named for the vacation spot of the ancient Greek gods, Cythera pampers villa guests with a large outdoor pool and an inviting sun room and hammock. Families will love the kitchen with its sliding window for serving meals at the dining room table on the outdoor patio -- you can cook dinner while enjoying a breathtaking view of the sea.

Connemara

Not only is Connemara a lovely villa with all the amenities you'd expect -- including a big pool -- its location also provides great views of the Soufriere Hills volcano and the mud-choked Belham Valley.
