The post-Carnival season of Lent is a more solemn time in the Caribbean, but that hardly means that March lacks for fun and interesting events, festivals, concerts and more, including island-flavored Easter and St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
St. Patrick's Day
Montserrat's St. Patrick's Day celebration is one of the world's largest outside the Auld Sod and the U.S., thanks to the Irish immigrants who helped settle this small volcanic island. St. Croix doesn't have quite as many Irish but still knows how to throw a St. Paddy's Day parade!
Trelawny Yam Festival
The yam may be a terrific tuber, but a whole festival? Jamaica's Trelawny Parish -- located in the Cockpit Country region -- manages to make this much more fun than it sounds, drawing in more than 10,000 attendees each year to feast on yam dishes, honor a yam king and queen, gawk at giant yams, and play yam-related games. And of course there is a concert at the end of Yam Festival Day, featuring the best of Jamaican music.Anguilla Moonsplash
The driftwood home of famed Anguilla reggae star Bankie Banx -- known as the Dune Preserve -- serves as home base for the annual Anguilla Moonsplash concert festival, attracting such diverse artists as Jimmy Buffett, Steel Pulse, Black Uhuru, and of course Bankie himself.Bermuda International Film Festival
More than 80 films are screened over nine days in March as part of what is called one of only four truly independent film festivals in the world. Features, documentaries and short films are screened at four theaters on the island, and the program also includes chats with filmmakers, parties, and more.St. John Blues Festival
U.S. blues artists flock to the Coral Bay Ball Field on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands for the annual St. John Blues Festival, sponsored by local musician Steve Simon.
