Best Hotels and Resorts in the French Caribbean Island of Martinique

By , About.com Guide

Martinique is a department (state) of France, so visitors to the island won't be surprised to learn that most hotels adhere to less-demanding European standards rather than American ones. That said, Martinique is home to some world-class upscale resorts, a couple of all-inclusives, and will soon have its first U.S.-branded resort, which could lure more Americans down to this most unique -- and very French -- corner of the Caribbean.

Cap Est

A koi pond and lobby waterfall greet new arrivals at this exclusive, Asian-influenced resort known for its service and a spa that never serves more than two guests at a time for maximum attention and privacy. Beautiful, spacious grounds face a private lagoon beach, and privacy lovers gravitate toward a picturesque floating dock with beach chairs for sunning and napping. Rooms are sleek and stylish, and the better suites have private outdoor pools. The epicurean restaurant at this Relais and Chateau property is excellent, and the meeting room and library make the Cap Est surprisingly friendly for business travelers.

Villa Suites

This fun, modern, design hotel also attracts young travelers with reasonable room rates. Owner Gilles is eccentric in a uniquely Gallic mix of charm and impatience, but he has built a hotel that channels South Beach by way of L.A. with its ultralounge-style bar, unique pop art in the rooms and lobby, and a hillside locale overlooking the twinkling lights of Fort de France across the harbor at night. The tourist town of Trois Ilets is a five-minute drive away.

Hotel Bakoua

This small, upscale boutique hotel in Trois Ilets is an ideal home base in Martinique for first-time visitors or those without a rental car, providing easy access to the Fort de France ferry as well as a tourist-oriented town packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and one of the island's few casinos. Rooms are relatively modest but face a small crescent beach and harbor dotted with pleasure boats. Louvres open onto covered patios -- leave them open and you can lay in bed and enjoy the views. An infinity-edge pool and water-sports center highlight the resort amenities.
