Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Jamaica

© Kit Kettle
Named for its black cliffs, Negril was a sleepy fishing town for most of its 500-year history until the 1960s and 70s, when tourists began coming for the laid-back lifestyle, reggae music, freely available (if still illegal) local ganja, and the splendors of beautiful Seven Mile Beach.

Today, Seven Mile Beach remains one of the best strands in the world and is lined with both small hotels and big, all-inclusive resorts like Couples Negril and Sandals Beach Resort and Spa. Despite having the only “legal” nude beach in Jamaica, Negril’s reputation for hedonism has been toned down over the years. But you’ll still have no problem having a good time in this town, day or night.

About 300,000 travelers visit Negril each year, enjoying libations at Margaritaville and the the other clubs and bars in town, diving off the West End Cliffs at Rick’s Cafe, chilling at the Kool Runnings Water Park, or getting a taste of the real Jamaica at the Appleton Estate rum estate tour.

Negril is located on Jamaica’s west coast. It’s about a 50-mile drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, a journey that often can take two hours depending on traffic.
