“I believe we have turned a pig’s ear into a silk purse,” said Greg Norman at the unveiling of the Blue Shark Golf Club, a recently redesigned 18 hole par-72 course located in Nassau, Bahamas. The Aussie golf superstar has retooled the former South Ocean Golf Club as the centerpiece of a large master-planned community located on the southwestern end of the island of New Providence, lengthening the course to 7200 yards while preserving the natural topography, ocean views, and native vegetation.

“Blue Shark offered a rare opportunity as a course designer,” said Norman. “It was a challenge and an inspiration to transform a popular and well-designed existing layout into a new and entirely distinctive golfing experience.”

Blue Shark is part of the envisioned 400-acre New South Ocean Resort being developed by New York real estate investor Roger Stein in conjunction with Meadowbrook Golf. The complex ultimately will include luxury hotels, home sites, a beach club, retail center, mega-yacht marina and casinos. “Norman was brilliant in preserving the best elements of the pre-existing course and dramatically enhancing and modernizing them,” said Stein. “Greg is a one-of-a-kind visionary. He saw things others didn’t. The finished product speaks for itself.”

While the weather was less than ideal on the day of our visit, a contingent of sports writers, journalists, semi-pros and hackers followed Norman as he played several holes and demonstrated his abilities from the gold tee before we all got a crack at testing out our skills. Two putting greens and a driving range allow for a quick warmup before attacking the course.
