Cancun, in the state of Quintana Roo, was previously a long strip of forest flanked by beaches. Cancun is now the biggest resort area in the country, with a population near 500 000, but receiving over 3 million visitors annually.

Cancun -- in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, on the Caribbean Sea-- is a tourist powerhouse, with white-sand beaches, and a double waterfront with both beach and lagoon sides. A 25-kilometre Hotel Zone is full of urban-style pleasures: shopping, dining, and bars that college spring-breakers love... Many families, too, flock to Cancun resorts. The Avalon Reef Club is located on a small private island connected with a short wooden bridge to Isla Mujeres. The tiny, quaint island of Isla Mujeres is about six miles off the coast of Cancun and has its own share of activities and dining, so you may not need to venture too far. At night, tables are set on the terrace for dining under the sunset and stars.

The Ritz-Carlton is miles away from (and above) most travelers’ conception of the Cancun experience. As the very first Ritz-Carlton to open outside of the United States, it was part of the original efforts to develop Cancun as a high-end destination. Though Cancun itself has become more of a spring break party destination (to the dismay of everyone over the age of 22), the hotel has continued to maintain the elegance of the brand.

ME Cancun is a luxury 419-room hotel situated on a glorious stretch of beach at the heart of the hotel zone in Cancun, on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The upscale Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, and regularly scores the prestigious AAA Five-Diamond Award. Location is near the northern tip of the 25-km Cancun Hotel Zone, with many restaurants and shops nearby.

Club Med Cancun Yucatan has arguably the best location in Cancun, with 22 acres and its own peninsula at the south end of the Hotel Zone. Club Med has a sweep of white-sand beach (with view of Cancun hotels all in a row), and round the point (Punta Nizuc), a private stretch of seaside with snorkeling over coral, and a further beach area with watersports. The resort also has a lagoon side.

The Avalon Baccara is a pretty beachfront boutique hotel in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Clientele is predominantly adults, but families can stay at this property, and kids can use the Wild Things kids' club at the adjacent Avalon Grand Cancun.

The Avalon Resorts group has several resorts in the Cancun area: Avalon Reef Club on Isla Mujeres, and the Avalon Baccara boutique hotel which is "two doors down" from the Avalon Grand Cancun. The all inclusive Avalon Grand Cancun is in the Hotel Zone on a 14-mile stretch of Caribbean beach.

The Crown Paradise Club Resort & Spa is 9 miles from the airport, on the quieter south end of Cancun's giant Hotel Zone. The Crown Paradise brand also has the family-friendly Crown Paradise Club Puerta Vallarta, and two adults-only resorts

In the Yucatan peninsula, with white sand beaches on the Caribbean Sea, Cancun's 25-km Hotel Zone of double waterfront (ocean and lagoon) is a hotspot for shoppers, diners-out, and spring-breakers... But families do flock here too.

The Beach Palace is in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone, 15 minutes from the airport and close to malls, handcrafts market, entertainment areas. The Cancun Hotel Zone has water on two sides, and this property has views of both the Caribbean ocean and of Nichupte lagoon.

The Moon Palace is not strictly in Cancun but is usually classed as a Cancun all-inclusive; location is 5 miles south of the Cancun airport, with nearly 2000 feet of white sand beach and 55 acres of lush foliage.

Renovated and reconceived in 2006 as a family resort, this hip all-inclusive has something for everyone.

Cancun has many all-inclusives that welcome families, and is a convenient launch-pad for day-trips in the Mayan Riviera, a terrific region with Mayan ruins, snorkeling lagoons, coral reef, Xcaret and other lovely "eco-theme parks".

High-rise 600-room hotel on the Cancun beach is noted for having one of the largest infinity-edge pools you'll ever see.
