Hurricane Warning

By Robert Curley, About.com

Definition: Meteorologists tracking Atlantic hurricanes like those that affect the Caribbean issue an official "hurricane warning" when a hurricane (a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph or higher) is expected to hit the geographic warning area within the next 24 hours.
Examples: The National Weather Service issued a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast of the United States shortly before the powerful Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005.
