Top Bermuda Attractions

By Robert Curley, About.com

With centuries of history and long experience catering to visitors, Bermuda boasts an abundance of natural and man-made attractions. This tiny island has 785 historic homes, crennalated forts, and natural caves that await your explorations. Here's my picks for some of the best.

1. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

Climb 245 feet to the top of the world's oldest cast-iron lighthouse, built in 1846, for commanding views of the islands that comprise Bermuda. The former keeper's house has been converted into a tearoom, so visitors can cap off their descent with a warm cup of traditional English tea; breakfast, lunch and dinner also are served.

2. Dolphin Quest

Touch, feed, play and swim with dolphins at this Dockyards attraction, with the historic buildings of the Bermuda Maritime Museum as a backdrop.

3. Royal Naval Dockyards/Bermuda Maritime Museum

Commissioned in 1795, Bermuda's former Royal Navy base is today home to the Bermuda Maritime Museum. Sights include the former fort's massive keep, commissioner's house, and other historic buildings. Museum exhibits cover a wide range of history, including the island's seafaring trade, slavery, the annual Newport-Bermuda race, and tourism.

4. Crystal Caves

Crystal Cave is a classic "show cave" that's popular with island visitors, who get to cross a pontoon bridge over an illuminated, 55-foot-wide underground lake; the sister Fantasy Cave is another water-filled limestone wonder. There's also a gift shop and a restaurant, Cafe Ole, on site.

5. Fort St. Catherine

Dating to the late 1800s, this English fortress now houses a museum with an antique weapons collection and dioramas depicting Bermuda history. The views of the Atlantic from the fort are nothing short of spectacular.
