The Puerto Plata region is home to the low-key beach town of Cabarete, famed for its surfing, as well as the beachfront hotels of Cofresi, Playa Dorada, and Maimon. A conveniently close international airport provides access to both all-inclusive and room-only type hotels, with many of the pay-one-price resorts located at Maimon.

Allegro Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada)

Just minutes away from the Puerto Plata airport and downtown, the Allegro Playa Dorada is a 494-room beachfront resort with a pair of freeform pools, a wide range of included activities (including merengue, bachata and salsa classes), six restaurants and four bars. Golf, deep-sea fishing and scuba diving are nearby but cost extra.

Grand Oasis Marien

Located about 20 minutes from the Puerto Plata airport, the Grand Oasis Marien -- named for a Taino Indian prince -- offers 332 rooms in four classes, including oceanview rooms and suites. The all-inclusive package includes free drinks at the resort's sports bar and other restaurants and bars. Activities include aerobic and Latin dance classes, mini-golf, windsurfing and kayaking, diving, and tennis on lighted clay courts.

Riu Bachata

Uniquely sited on a beautiful and secluded promontory, the Riu Bachata is a luxury all-inclusive retreat on Maimon Bay, with 610 bungalow-style rooms surrounded by tropical gardens. The resort is located in the Puerto Plata region, 15 miles from the airport. Amenities include a spa, casino, multiple restaurants, and the Pacha nightclub.

This Puerto Plata resort caters to an international clientele and shares the Riu resort complex with the Riu Mambo and Riu Bachata hotels. Like the Riu resort in Punta Cana, there is a Caribbean Street running through the complex lined with shops, restaurants, and a spa. Riu Merengue guests have a range of dining and activities to choose from and also can enjoy the nearby casino at Riu Bachata.

Named after a Robin Hood-style pirate captain, the Sun Village Cofresi is a mix of 300 hotel rooms and private villas. Rooms are first-claas, stocked with beer and other beverages and equipped with 32-inch flat-screen TVs. Choose from seven pools and five restaurants, and activities like horseback riding, tennis, bicycles, and introductory scuba lessons are included. The Ocean World Marine Water Park and Casino is nearby, and Sun Village host the annual Dominican International Film Festival. You also can rent the resort's 55-foot yacht, The Independence, for excursions.

Viva Wyndham Samana

As the name suggests, the Viva Wyndham Samana is located on the quiet Samana peninsula, a hub for eco-tourism on the Dominican Republic's northeast coast. The resort is close to the town of Las Terrenas, but about three hours from the Puerto Plata airport (a $150 shuttle ride). Guests stay in a choice of 218 guest rooms with ocean or garden views have three restaurants to choose from. Reduced rates for kids 12 and under sharing a room with two paying adults.

Viva Wyndham Tangerine

The Viva Wyndham Tangerine, part of the international Wyndham resorts chain, is located in the Puerto Plata region of the Dominican Republic near the town of Cabarete. The 221-room resort is set on a private beach and features a trio of restaurants, the Loft bar, and a nightclub. Food, all standard drinks, activities, non-motorized water sports, and kids club are included.
