Both Orbitz and Expedia have named Cancun the top travel destination in Mexico, where overall tourist visits have jumped 20 percent this year. Expedia's nod is new, while Orbitz tipped its hat to Cancun in 2011.
Summer occupancy rates at Cancun hotels reached a very healthy 88 percent, according to local tourism officials. Visitors have been attracted in part because of new hotels like the Hard Rock Cancun (Book Now), and events celebrating the end of the Mayan Calendar later this month (which some say will also be the end of the world!) are expected to keep travel to Cancun strong through the winter.
