Carnival Cruise Line and its partners in the Dominican Republic are pouring $65 million into construction of a new cruise port on the Caribbean nation's north shore. Slated to open in 2014, the Amber Cove Cruise Center is being built on the Bay of Maimon near Puerto Plata, which hasn't seen cruise visitors in more than three decades.

The 30-acre site will include a cruise-ship pier, shops, a marketplace for local goods, restaurants, a transportation center, and a water park.
