Blowing on conch shells isn't just some dumb thing they do to amuse tourists in Key West: back in the 18th century, ships would communicate with each other by blowing into the shells, often to send out an alert to salvagers about a foundering ship.
These days, like most things in Key West, there's an overlay of kitch on the annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest (a.k.a. the Conch Honk), but some talented honkers can make suprisingly complex music on these natural instruments.
The 2012 Conch Honk will be held March 3 at Key West's Oldest House; entry is free. The event is sponsored by the Old Island Restoration Foundation.
