Drinking the Caribbean: The Virgin Islands Ice Tea

By , About.com GuideFebruary 2, 2012

Follow me on:

Had a Long Island Iced Tea? This is different. Very different. St. Croix native Cruzan Rum recently came out with a line of tropical-fruit flavored rums, and this wicked concoction was obviously the evil brain child of some marketing executive who figured that, in the ideal cocktail, the more shots of rum, the better.

That's not a knock on the Virgin Islands Ice Tea. For the record, unlike its Long Island cousin, this drink tastes nothing like iced tea. However, it's similar in that, well-blended, you really don't get a sense of how much liquor you're drinking (a lot) or how quickly these things will go to your head (very).

We drained these all over St. Thomas and St. John when we visited last month, and found them to be fruity, fresh and fun. The challenge for making them at home is that you'll need five separate bottles of flavored Cruzan rum. I'm sure that has nothing to do with product marketing, at all. Well, the good news is that Cruzan is basically cheaper than water in the U.S.V.I., and you can bring home gallons (almost) of the stuff duty-free when you visit.

Here's the recipe:

Virgin Islands Ice Tea

1 part Cruzan Dark Rum
1 part Cruzan Coconut Rum
1 part Cruzan Pineapple Rum
1 part Cruzan Guava Rum
1 part Cruzan Mango Rum
1/2 part sour mix
Splash of cola
