When Jimmy Buffett sang about blowing out a flip flop and stepping on a pop top, he didn't know the half of it. The Washington Post reported that podiatrists see a rash of foot injuries and foot problems each year as the weather warms up and people switch over to flip-flops and other types of open shoes.
"Wearing flip-flops can cause problems ranging from stubbed toes and cuts to overuse injuries such as foot stress fractures," the Post reported. Sunburn can also be an unexpected problem, especially in the Caribbean where the sun beats down on your feet all day.
Not that experts advise that you avoid flip-flops altogether: just wear them in moderation -- like to the beach, not for walking around town -- and spring for better-made models that have more stables soles.
