Poor management has put Haiti's Sans Souci palace on a list of the world's 20 most threatened heritage sites, according to the Global Heritage Fund.
Reuters reported Oct. 18 that the "Versailles of the Caribbean" is on the verge of irreversible decay and destruction despite being named a UNESCO World Heritage site. The "Saving Our Vanishing Heritage" report names more than 200 imperiled sites worldwide.
"Governments must have a pretty good capacity to be able to take care of these places, and many just don't have the resources," said Global Heritage Fund executive director Jeff Morgan. On the other hand, he noted, neglecting sites like the one in Haiti could be costing countries massive amounts of tourism revenues.
