CNN is reporting that a bar in Cancun was firebombed early this morning, resulting in the deaths of eight people. The Castillo del Mar bar was located outside the city's hotel zone and was patronized mainly by locals, not tourists. The bar reportedly had been the target of extortion attempts by members of the Zetas drug cartel.
Cancun has largely been spared the drug-related violence that has plagued other parts of Mexico, and the incidents that have taken place have, like this one, been outside traditional tourist areas and targeted locals. Still, the attack on any bar in a city known for its nightlife is bound to give pause to anyone considering a visit to Mexico's Riviera.
