Hurricane Earl Strengthens as Storm Hits Virgin Islands

By , About.com GuideAugust 30, 2010

Follow me on:

Hurricane Earl is currently bringing winds of up to 125 mph to the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and hurricane conditions also are expected in Puerto Rico this afternoon. Hurricane warnings also remain in effect for Anguilla, St. Martin/Maarten, Saba, St. Barts, and St. Eustatius. A tropical storm warning has been posted for Turks and Caicos.

The center of this Category 3 storm is expected to pass over the northernmost of the Virgin Islands later today or tonight. Forecasters expect the storm to take a turn to the north, which would leave the Dominican Republic and Haiti out of harms way but could take Earl to the east coast of the U.S.
