Teen Shot, Killed on Tour to St. Thomas' Coki Beach

By July 13, 2010

Follow me on:

A teenage girl from Puerto Rico was fatally shot while riding in a tour van to St. Thomas' popular Coki Point Beach, the Associated Press reported July 13. Lizmarie Perez Chapparo, 14, was reportedly caught in the crossfire as rival gangs engaged in a shootout at a funeral, with shots striking the passing tour bus.

Chapparo and her family had been visiting St. Thomas as passengers aboard Carnival Cruise Lines Victory. The family was not on a Carnival excursion, but the cruise line suspended immediately suspended its Coki Beach trips in the wake of the tragedy.

Coki Beach, on the east end of St. Thomas, is a popular destination for cruise excursions and other visitors to the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, the trip to the beach involves passing through some bad neighborhoods, and the atmosphere at the beach itself can also be sketchy. Gun and gang violence have been a persistent problem on the island in recent years.

Wow, what a horrible thing to happen. St. Thomas is getting worse and worse. This funeral was for a guy that was shot in the middle of the day in one of the busyest shopping plaza’s on island.
My heart goes out to the teenagers family

How terribly terribly sad for the family of this girl – my thoughts are with them.
The statistics in this article are sad though and something needs to be done quickly. How can you have so much crime and so many murders with such a small population?? Places like St Thomas rely on tourism for their economy and to lose these high numbers of visitors would have drastic consequences on the Caribbean Island. Jamaica has suffered similar bad press recently and a number of cruise lines have now dropped their calls into Jamaican ports. If things don’t change for St Thomas, they will suffer the same fate

Sadly this is not an isolated incident my son was murdered on the streets of Cruz Bay ST John USVI June 19, 2007. His killers have not been sentenced although they have all been convicted twice.
Two NYC men in 2006 were shot dead they came to St Thomas for a friends wedding.
A young woman from Pa., was brutally slashed by a local on St Thomas a few months ago she lost her eye and no one has been arrested although there were many eye witnesses.

Send in the National Guard or at least real police from the states.

My husband and I stopped by that beach the Thurs. before. A local friend had warned about leaving anything in our car. A bunch of young guys were hanging around on the street & offered to park our car. We declined & parked at Coral World, looked around at the beach and decided it was all too sketchy for us and left. Our intuition was right on. So sad for the 14 year old girl and her family.
