I have mixed feelings about private cruise islands like Disney's Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. On the one hand, they provide a fun and easy break from the confines of the cruise ship. On the other hand, I think they are indicative of the worst aspects of cruising -- namely, that travelers can become so insulated from the real Caribbean that it almost doesn't matter what the ship's destination is, as long as it's somewhere warm.
Having said all that, if you're going to have a private island on your cruise itinerary, it should at least be pretty cool. And to Disney Cruise Line's credit, Castaway Cay is a fun place -- even more so with the latest improvements announced for 2010, which include:
- Castaway Family Beach will be extended by more than 700 feet and enhanced with a new Cookies Too family lunch buffet location, Sand Bar beach bar, Flippers & Floats beach rentals providing inner tubes, snorkels, masks and fins, and Buy the Sea Shore shop.
- New water play attractions, including the Pelican Plunge, a 2,400-square-foot offshore platform with a pair of water slides, a giant "bucket dump," and four water cannons. There's also a new 2,400-square-foot water play area called Spring-a-Leak with the usual exquisite Disney theming, and another kids water play area at Scuttle's Cove.
- 20 beach cabanas available for rent
- New teens-only beach area
- New location for the Castaway Cay stingray-encounter program
- In Da Shade Game Pavilion withs table tennis, foosball, billiards and basketball.
