As of Aug. 14, American Airlines will begin charging $20 for a first checked bag and $30 for a second checked bag on domestic flights (including those to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), up from the current $15 and $20, respectively. The fees also apply to American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights.
Exempted from the fees are international flights -- including those to non-U.S. destinations in the Caribbean -- and high-level members of the AAdvantage frequent-flyer program, First and Business Class passengers, and travelers flying on full-fare Economcy Class tickets.
