Americans are still eager to visit the Mexican Caribbean, despite the intense media coverage of drug violence and swine flu -- a testament to the resilience of the American traveler and the appeal of this great destination. The American Society of Travel Agents' 2009 Summer Hot Spots Survey finds that Cancun remains the fourth most-popular summer travel destination, with 6.8 percent of travelers planning to visit Cancun this summer. Punta Cana was ranked fifth, booked by 2.2 percent of travelers.
In fact, Mexico remains the number-two most popular destination for international tourists from the U.S., with 17.1 percent of travelers booking trips south of the border.
Italy was the most popular international destination, while London, Rome and Paris were the most popular international cities. Within the U.S., Orlando and Las Vegas were the most frequently booked summer travel destinations.
