Get Going with Girlfriend Getaways in the Caribbean

Monday October 6, 2008
"Girlfriend getaways" are more than a clever marketing strategy: research shows that many women -- single and married alike -- crave a vacation where that can bond with their "BFFs" without the guys around. A recent American Express Travel survey found that the Caribbean was the most popular destination for a girls-only vacation, and my new story on Caribbean Girlfriend Getaways can get you on your way.

"Vacations to exotic locales are replacing the ol-fashioned weekend getaways for female group travel," says Carolina Voullieme, director of marketing at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort. "Women are definitely indulging in more luxurious vacations than in past years. Also, while spa, beach and shopping remain a favorite for female getaways, women are increasingly seeking more active vacations that include scuba diving, biking, culinary, adventure and eco-friendly activities."

The American Express Travel said that while spa, beach and shopping vacations remain favorites for girls getaways, travel agents say women are increasingly taking cruise, culinary, city and active vacations that include golf (36%), skiing (33%), scuba diving and biking (20%). Many girls getaways are not merely weekend retreats but between 4 and 7 days long, with women are splurging on customized tours and experiences (42%), traveling first or business class (36%), and staying in private villas (20%).
