Airlines Impose More Baggage Fees

Monday September 22, 2008
Continental Airlines and Frontier Airlines have joined the ranks of airlines charging to check any luggage: both airlines are now charging $15 for the first checked bag on flights within the U.S. and to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Among major U.S. airlines, that leaves just Delta, Southwest and JetBlue as airlines that don't charge fees for a first checked bag.

Meanwhile, Delta and United Airlines have doubled their fees for a second checked bag from $25 to $50, and suddenly travelers to Puerto Rico and the U.S.V.I. are being confronted with a real quandary when packing for an extended stay in the Caribbean, as well as on decisions like whether to purchase and bring home bulky souvenirs or even liquor. At $50 a bag, shipping might be a cheaper alternative to packing!
