Caymans Brace for Gustav

Friday August 29, 2008
The Cayman Islands, battered by Hurricane Ivan four years ago, are preparing for another unwelcome visitor: Tropical Storm Gustav.

The storm lashed Jamaica with 60 mph winds and heavy rains and is on track to pass over or quite near to the Caymans, which lost 70 percent of their buildings to the Category 5 Ivan in 2004. Gustav isn't nearly that powerful, but experts say the storm is likely to grow to hurricane strength in the coming days -- perhaps up to Category 3 by the time it approaches Cuba on Saturday.

Cayman Islands officials have banned all incoming tourist arrivals until Gustav passes, and all hotels on the island are now closed, with shelters opening on Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. No mandatory evacuation order has been issued, but Cayman Airlines has added a dozen additional flights from Grand Cayman to Miami to get tourists off the island ahead of the storm.
