Late Season Storm Surprise
Wednesday December 12, 2007
The Caribbean hurricane season may officially end in November, but travelers got a rude reminder that storms can still hit the region even in December and beyond. Subtropical Storm Olga, with sustained winds of up to 50 miles per hour and heavy rains, soaked the north coasts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and Haiti before heading west towards Jamaica and Cuba.
Flooding and landslides killed at least four people.
Olga is just the 10th named storm to hit the region in the past 150-odd years. It is expected to affect Jamaica today; projections have the storm sliding south of Cuba before possibly making landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday and affecting the Mexican Caribbean resort areas there.
