Caribbean Travel Health Information

Monday June 18, 2007
Travel health problems are generally not a big concern for visitors to the Caribbean: you can drink the water just about everywhere, and most travelers can even indulge in the local tradition of "street food" without suffering any ill effects.

However, this is still the tropics, so the occasional outbreak of tropical diseases like malaria and dengue fever, while rare, is not unheard of, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does recommend that travelers get up to date on their vaccinations when traveling to certain Caribbean countries.

The CDC's Travel Health website is a great resource, with information about everything from the latest disease outbreaks to advice on safe scuba diving and tips on seeking health care overseas. For your convenience, I've assembled the CDC's travel health advisories for all of the islands of the Caribbean in a single document on my Caribbean site. If you're traveling to the islands this year, take a few minutes to review the CDC bulletin on your destination to make sure that your visit is both happy and healthy.
