Sir George Martin Unveils Montserrat Cultural Center

Friday June 8, 2007
Former Beatles producer Sir George Martin opened the doors of the new Montserrat Cultural Center in May. The center is located in Little Bay, an area of the volcano-ravaged island that Montserrat residents are hoping to develop into a new urban center.

The $2-million project was spearheaded by Martin, who operated Air Studios on the island until it was hit by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. A 1997 concert at Royal Albert Hall in London was part of the fundraising effort for the new center, which includes the 700-seat Sir George Martin Auditorium, conference rooms, a bar and restaurant, and outdoor performance space.

The 2007 Miss CARICOM Pageant, emceed by actor Danny Glover, will take place at the center on July 21.
