Powerful Caribbean Storms Linked to Global Warming

Friday March 16, 2007
Has a hurricane put a damper on your Caribbean vacation? You can blame global warming for the increased number and strength of these deadly storms, experts recently concluded.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently issued a report saying that the stronger hurricanes and tropical cyclones reported since 1970 "more likely than not" were caused by manmade global warming, which has led to a rise in surface sea temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, where hurricanes are born and grow.

Hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June through November. The Caribbean was hit by a number of strong hurricanes in 2005, but the 2006 hurricane season was surprisingly mild. For more information on how to keep your trip hurricane-free, see my Caribbean Weather Planner.
