Contrary to current hysteria, it's not impossible for Americans to travel to the Caribbean without a valid U.S. passport. First, the new rules only apply to travelers returning to the U.S.; most Caribbean destinations will still let you enter with just a birth certificate and driver's license. Second, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the U.S., so you'll never need a passport to travel there.
