TSA Amends Baggage Rules

Friday August 18, 2006
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has backed off a total ban on carrying liquids, lotions, and gels aboard airliners, and will now allow passengers to carry on small doses of liquid medication (up to 4 ounces), glucose gel for diabetics, solid lipstick, and baby food.

However, TSA also clarified its earlier advisory by noting that aerosols are prohibited. And all passengers also are now being required to remove their shoes at security checkpoints; previously, taking shoes off was strongly advised, but not required.

"These tweaks are aimed at making a smoother process at the checkpoint," said TSA Assistant Secretary Kip Hawley.

For more information, see the TSA website. And for some great tips on packing in compliance with the new rules, see this excellent article by About.com Hawaii guide John Fischer.
