All manner of liquids – from suntan lotion to drinks to contact-lens solution – will now be banned from being carried onboard U.S. airline flights, effective immediately. The new rules from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) comes after officials in the U.K. uncovered a suspected al Qaida-linked plot to blow up airliners traveling between London and the U.S. using liquid-based explosives concealed in carry-on luggage.
Liquids may still be packed in checked luggage.
Although the thwarted plot appeared to be limited to trans-Atlantic flights, TSA is warning all airline passengers – including those heading to the Caribbean – to expect stepped-up security and more delays at security checkpoints at U.S. airports. The TSA's security threat level has been raised to red, or severe, for London-bound flights and to orange, or high, for all other U.S. flights. For full details, see the TSA website.
